The Chicago Fire Department's shops numbering program began around January 1923 while the department was in the final stages of complete motorization. The last response with horse-drawn equipment would occur on February 5, 1923. Department-owned motorized equipment was to be cataloged by vehicle size and function, and some of these definitions would change in later years.
